A Wrinkle in Time

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A Wrinkle in Time is visually gorgeous, big-hearted, and occasionally quite moving; unfortunately, it's also wildly ambitious to a fault, and often less than the sum of its classic parts.

KerryWhite's S Rating: 5/10. 50/100 Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/18/24 Full Review Carlos I It's got a great message at its heart, but it's far too melodramatic, corny and just plain boring to be anything other than laughable. Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review Audience Member Over 5 years later this ends being pretty misguided but relatively harmless The plot is notoriously difficult to explain being it's based on the book by Madeleine L'Engle Director Ava Duvernay helms a large cast starring Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling, Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Zach Galafanakis, Michael Pena, and Rowan Blanchard in fantasy/sci-fi story of family Meg's parents are eager to explore more of the universe and traveling to other parts of it; of course her father has been doubted by everyone so he decides to venture on his own tapping into the right frequency But he ends up going missing in between dimensions trying to make his discovery after a year 3 magical witches Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who then offer to take Meg, her brother, and friend Calvin to look for him and they come across other worldly things like sentient flowers, flying leaves, and an evil entity called the IT that feeds off beings' negative energy Meg has to learn to open her mind and be more trusting to herself battling her insecurities in the process The movie is good, not great, felt very rushed and a lot of those scenes in the trailer were missing I think the biggest issue is that the book is full of more Christian themes which maybe explains why this movie was so limited and they didn't want to step on anyone's toes It does have a clear cut allegory about the evils of communism and conformity But there are some effective emotional moments, interesting visuals, some interesting concepts, and it has a great slew of actors Aside from Pine and Reid who nail their roles perfectly everyone else feels like they're in a completely different movie In order to be great it's not enough to be right, finding out all the universe's secrets cannot measure how much love we have in our hearts, we don't have to be desperate to matter in the universe This movie might still stand out as one of those trippy movies kids can look back on making them think Won't hold much for adults though for all the trippyness involved I do like the fantasy element as well as the actors but the narrative is clumsy Rated 3.5/5 Stars • Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/09/24 Full Review Lucero D La trama de esta película es de un tipo cliché mal hecho, resultando ser molesta, además el humor es más hediondo e intolerable que los chistes de franco escamilla. No puedo expresar lo decepcionada que me siento, ni siquiera logré ver más allá de la mitad por lo terrible que es. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/24 Full Review Michael F Not as bad as anyone says, but also nothing to remember, except for the soundtrack. Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/24/24 Full Review Jeff M Extremely disappointing, uninspired and sometimes downright dull adaptation of the Madeleine L'Engle novel. I was shocked how detached I felt from this film, how very little emotional connection existed. The special effects appeared to be quite expensive but seemed to lack any spark of originality despite some individually beautiful moments. Performances were serviceable but nothing outstanding. It's another movie with a wonderful albeit New Age-y message that nevertheless doesn't succeed in its execution. A Wrinkle in Time | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Jenn Jackson Bitch Media The fantastic journey through space and time was as engaging visually as it was narratively. Mar 5, 2021 Full Review A Wrinkle in Time | Rotten Tomatoes (2) tt stern-enzi WXIX-TV (Cincinnati, OH) I was really looking forward to the idea of it being one of those stories for young girls and kids, the STEM aspect of it, sci-fi... technology... but this is more of a fantasy. Mar 4, 2019 Full Review A Wrinkle in Time | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Caryn James BBC.com The film's themes of love, family and self-acceptance are powerful enough to resonate with audiences. But the concept and casting shouldn't be the most magical parts of a fantasy film, no matter how enchanting its message is.
