What we aim to solve
SOURCE: Self-reported by organization
Violent crime, including domestic abuse, sexual assault, child abuse, and dating violence continues to plague the citizens of our community. The number of victims seeking services such as emergency shelter and counseling continues to remain steady throughout the previous three years. It is imperative that victims of crime have easy access to vital services to aid in their recovery. Without such resources victims are more likely to remain in a violent situation and children who witnessed abuse or were abused themselves are more likely to perpetuate the cycle of abuse into adulthood.

"The Door" Domestic Violence Shelter
FamilyTime's shelter "The Door" is the only emergency shelter in northeast Harris County serving victims of domestic violence and their specific needs. Since opening in July 1996, the shelter has provided safe housing to over 6,500 victims of domestic violence and their children. While residing at FamilyTime's shelter, clients are provided with counseling, case management, legal advocacy, childcare, transportation, and other essential services. As a 24-hour facility, the average daily operating cost for the shelter is approximately $1,500 per day.
Counseling Center/Non Residential Services
FamilyTime provides free non-residential services to victims of abuse such as counseling, support groups, legal advocacy, a 24-hour crisis helpline, and case management. In addition to the free services for victims of abuse, FamilyTime also provides fee-based services to non-victims such as counseling, parenting skills education and anger management classes.
Liberty County Outreach Office
FamilyTime's Liberty County Outreach Office offers non-residential counseling and case management services to a historically underserved, rural region of Texas. Free, professional counseling services are available to victims of abuse and other violent crimes while low-cost counseling on a sliding-scale is available for non-victim issues. Our caseworker provides case management and legal advocacy services which includes assisting clients with locating community resources such as housing and employment assistance to applying for Crime Victim's Compensation and accompaniment to court and law enforcement agencies.
Sexual Assault Program
FamilyTime's Sexual Assault Program includes advocacy and accompaniment to the local medical center to assist victims of sexual assault who are seeking medical treatment; legal advocacy and accompaniment to court and law enforcement agencies; free individual counseling and support groups. All services to victims are provided free of charge and are also available in Spanish.
Programs in Spanish
Shelter, services and advocacy for victims of abuse and human trafficking are also provided in Spanish. Services include a 24-hour hotline, crisis intervention, emergency housing, court and hospital accompaniment, court translators, assistance obtaining legal documents, visas, passports and birth certificates for parents and their children.

Goals & Strategy

Charting impact
Four powerful questions that require reflection about what really matters - results.
What is the organization aiming to accomplish?
FamilyTime's vision is to advocate for women, men and children in crisis situations and offer them the vital services they need in order to regain control of their lives. Services include counseling, case management, assistance with legal matters, and shelter from an abusive situation. In order to contribute through social change, we raise awareness in the community through education and training to prevent sexual violence and help break the cycle of domestic violence.
What are the organization's key strategies for making this happen?
FamilyTime Crisis and Counseling Center is a non-profit social service center founded in Humble, TX in 1977 and provides free services to victims of abuse and other violent crimes. Our domestic violence shelter “The Door” opened in July 1996 and provides emergency shelter to victims of domestic violence and their children.
The Door provides a safe living environment for those who are fleeing abusive situations. While residing at the shelter clients receive services such as counseling, legal advocacy and case management. These services work in concert to aid the client in their transition to self-sufficiency so that they may no longer have to rely financially or emotionally on those inflicting the abuse.
Our program seeks to assist victims during what is often one of the most traumatic times of their lives. They have suffered physical, emotional, sexual, and psychological abuse at the hands of a loved one. We provide stability and support to our clients during this tough time in their lives and work with them throughout their residency to help break the cycle of abuse and promote their long-term welfare.
FamilyTime and our shelter is located in Humble, TX which is situated in Northeast Harris County. Our service area covers approximately 800 square miles although we do not have any residency requirements for client eligibility.
Our goal is to assist the clients we serve in their return to physical and emotional health while helping them with the tools necessary to build new lives that are free of violence for their families thus helping to end the cycle of abuse. To achieve this goal we strive to assist those who have been affected by abuse assuring that they receive the necessary services to restore their health and well-being.
In addition to provide a safe, supportive living environment, “The Door” also provides additional resources to its residents by the way of legal advocacy and case management which includes assisting clients with filing for a protective order, police reporting, applying for Crime Victim’s Compensation, formulating individualized safety plans, accessing permanent housing, and assisting with other community resources that the client may be in need of. The emphasis is placed on educating the client on their legal rights and what resources are available to them. Professional counseling services are used to assist clients with issues concerning self-esteem, stress and anger management, understanding the cycle of abuse, and the long-term effects of abuse. Childcare is a crucial component of a victim’s recovery. When a client has access to free, quality childcare it enables them to access other services offered by the facility as well as outside resources such as employment and job skills training which are necessary to the client becoming self-sufficient and able to maintain a non-violent atmosphere for themselves and their children after leaving the shelter.
What are the organization's capabilities for doing this?
As a Better Business Bureau Houston Accredited Charity with an approval rating on 20 standards of charitable accountability, FamilyTime possesses the experience and background to effectively maximize grant funds while providing quality services to victims of abuse.
A well-trained direct service staff consisting of shelter advocates, bilingual hotline advocates, bilingual caseworkers, a legal advocate, sexual assault program coordinator, and licensed professional counselors and supervised licensed professional counseling interns provides immediate crisis intervention services as well as long-term support to assist in the transition from victim to survivor.
What have they accomplished so far and what's next?
In the most recently completed year (2017), FamilyTime provided the following services to our community: "The Door" provided safe housing to 643 victims of domestic violence and their children; 3,970 sessions of free counseling were provided to victims of abuse; 17,285 calls were answered on our 24-hour crisis hotline; 80 educational presentations were provided to the community; and 2,940 sessions of low-cost counseling were provided to non-victim clients.
In 2013 FamilyTime was not only able to retire the mortgage on our domestic violence shelter but we also raised the funds through a community campaign to purchase a non-residential service center with space enough to expand the services offered to the community. With the expansion we went from three counseling offices to 12 and we were able to increase our case management staff to better meet the demand for services.
In 2018 FamilyTime initiated a capital campaign to build a new, larger domestic violence shelter to replace the current, aging facility. With the new facility we will increase our ability by double to serve those in need of safe housing away from an abusive living situation. Through campaign contributions from the community we were able to purchase a tract of land in November 2018 where the new facility will be built.
